Just check the words you know. Honest replies necessary!

In my case: "Your total vocabulary size is estimated to be: 13,400 words. Most adults fall in the range 20,000–35,000, with the exact median score being 27,123 words."

Most of my friends from FB were better than me. :>

Marti - 21 Lipiec 2011, 07:58

2750 words. Not good. But I think I know more than 3k word in this language.
Vroo - 21 Lipiec 2011, 08:05

Maybe your replies were too honest and you didn't check some words though you knew what they mean. ;-)
alkohol to zło - 21 Lipiec 2011, 09:02

8,400 words, what a shame ;P
twisted - 21 Lipiec 2011, 11:59

My score is 13,500, but I wouldn't take it seriously as I reckon that if I were to count each and every English word I actually know and happen to use from time to time, I probably wouldn't even get as far as 5,000. :P

These estimations are fun but no more than a child's play as I'm acquainted with other resources saying that even a very educated English speakers don't know more than 20,000 words, whereas this site states that an average speaker is familiar with over 27,000 words.

There's also a significant difference between the total number of words we understand and the number of words we actually use on daily basis. Some sources say that an average English speaker uses 1,200-2,000 words everyday, while other give number as high as 5,000.

Then you must have some linguistically talented friends! So far I've had an impression that Poles aren't very keen on learning foreign languages.

Pathetic :P

alkohol to zło - 21 Lipiec 2011, 20:23

Estrella, maybe they are checking every word they've seen before without knowing its meaning :p
Marti - 21 Lipiec 2011, 20:34

Estrella, this test is too short to tell you anything about your language.

Check this website out. There's test of grammar of language. There're Polish and English and many more of languages.

I got 73 of 150 (no good) in English and 137 of 150 (pretty good) in Polish.

Well, for everyday usage you may need a few thousand words and not 20-25. Beyond 10k the test is about the passive knowledge.

Estrella - 22 Lipiec 2011, 17:30

You scored 133 points out of 150.
You are at the Advanced Beginner level.

How come? I have passed CPE
I forget a lot....old age, I guess :/

English Proficiency Test

You are at the Advanced Beginner level.
Your score = 78%

Pretty good , I only use English Internet slang.

cat - 24 Lipiec 2011, 17:06

My vocabulary size is estimated to be 4 060 words.
In English Proficiency Test my score is 124 points out of 150 = 83 %.
It's not very bad, but it's too little to speak fluently.

English Proficiency Test napisał/a:

You scored 145 points out of 150.

You are at the Intermediate level.

Your score = 97%

The only question I answered wrongly was the 5th one, in which I used the indicative instead of the proper subjunctive.

I agree with my result, as that's exactly how I'd describe myself (at the moment), 'an intermediate speaker of English'. :)

However, in a way, I fail to see how it can be called an English Proficiency Test as even when someone gets 100%, he is still regarded as being at the intermediate level. :P

Oh they are selling some PRODUCTS. Your English still has to be intermediate so that you buy these products. Besides, the test might have not included advanced topics.

twisted - 24 Lipiec 2011, 20:43

Yeah, you're completely right. This is a test aimed mostly at beginner and pre-intermediate speakers. If your English is a bit more advanced, it will not give you a good evaluation of your actual level. CPE and TOEFL are the appropriate exams for more advanced speakers.

Anyway, though I couldn't resist pinpointing it, I'm really not being particularly fussy about it, that's why I put the neutralising "in a way" there. ;)

I think is not shame, I know less number of words as you and I'm proud of it 4,800.

timidez - 27 Sierpień 2011, 20:14

It turned out i know 8,830 what is really good, i hope ;) But i think it will take some time before i'll be able to use English spontaneously and with no hardship.
Practice makes perfect, so let's go down to work with my wordlist ;)
